We have 3 computers; 2 w/W2k servers, 1 XP pro and we are adding a Linux box to the group. The intranet is behind a Linksys BEFSR41 hub that has DHCP server enabled and all the Windoze boxes are using DHCP. We want to develope for the web on both a W2k server and Linux Apache and be able to pull pages up from either server. Here's where I get nervous: I think we will need to use a DNS server and static IP address so we go to either W2k/page.com or Linux/page.com.

We plan on installing Debian and I read that Debian has a DNS server pkg.. I would like some feedback on; if you people think this is doable? Is there a better way to accomplish this? What kind of network information will I need to properly set up Linux to network?

And <BTW> This is also my first go a Linux too. <:-} So many of our hosts are runnung Linux, we want to develope on an in-house Linux box as well as a Windoze box.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, to have more than one test site on each server, you will ned to run a dns server. Almost all linux distros come with "bind" which is a dns server. You do not have to diable the dhcp server but you need to alow a small range of ip addresses that can be assigned as static. If your server ip addresses keep changing it would get a little crazy tracking them down. If you have a internet website, I'm sure you already have port forwarding setup for it but that won't be needed for http traffic on the back side of your router. As far as learning linux goes, that's the great thing about running servers. It seems like there is a never ending cycle of things you need to learn. It's kind of like when your dad threw you into the water to teach you how to swim. :) We're right here if you ever find yourself in deep water. Have Fun!
