Okay, i types uname -a
and i got...

Linux localhost 2.1.20-8 #1 ...........

what version of linux am i running? do i need update? is it secured?

Also, when i boot up the machine, it automatically goes to the xwindow login, i dont want it to go there yet, i want to login at the command prompt, and start xwin whenever i want. so how do i configure it to boot up and accept login from command prompt and not from window?

Thanks,

I'm no expert, so if I'm wrong please correct me... but it looks to me like you're running version 2.1.20-8 of the Kernel... which is kind of odd, because I was under the impression that in 2.x, when x is odd, it's a testing kernel.... when x is even, it's a production kernel.

So, I would suggest upgrading... and I would probably suggest skipping right by 2.2 and going to 2.4.22-whatever_it_is_today.

I'm not sure how to set it to go to the command prompt, but I do know alt-ctrl-shft-f1 at the xwin login will usually do it, though I think it will leave the X server in the background chewing up cycles.

COOL. thanks. now can someone tell me how to diable root login? from telnet, ssh.

I only want to SU to root and disable any form of possible root login remotely.

Thanks.

SSH's sshd.config has a setting to disable root login.
If you enable ssh, just disable telnet completely - that avoids root via telnet! :)
