Hi
I am new to Linux and am interested in creating a network for learning purposes. I am a little confused by my research that seems to be implying that there is no separate "server software(OS)" for Linux but you use the workstation copy. Is this true?

Thanks

Some distributions will have a "server" and a "workstation" install, but that just has to do with the packages they install by default...

I always do the custom install anyway...

Almost all distros of linux have a workstation install and a server install. Even with the workstation install you can still setup a peer to peer network which is a good place to start learning. The server install includes packages for http (web server), ftp, Telnet and mail servers to name a few. Some distros have a custom install which gives you the best of both worlds. You can run servers and still have a GUI desktop to help you find your way around until you are more comfortable working from the shell. Don't ask which distro is the best. Not everybody knows that it's RedHat so you will get a million different answers. The truth is they are all great and free to download.

what i suggest is that since ur new to linux u should go for custom install thats the best but if ur new to linux installation than plz back up ur data. in custom install ur find everything that u need to set up a network, and u can specify ur network configuration during installation or even after installation.it really cool .if u have any other questions than do mail them

happy networking

well i just wanna mention while its not
necessary to have a separate server OS,
you must start the packages (apache for http
and proftp for ftp for example). and there are
free DL gui to configure them, such as webmin.
