Hi all.

My network is a Windows 2003 AD Domain. I am looking for a solution to overcome our storage problem.

I am looking into linux based solutions and because I am no Linux guru, was wondering about authentication in such an environment.

Is it possible for a Linux server to be able to use the AD accounts to authenticate users? Or will I have to create and maintain the accounts manually on the Linux box?

Thanks for reading.

Winbind is your answer

use it with conjunction of samba, and you it'll integrate with the AD environment..

Winbind can be tricky to setup though..

We use a Linux based NAS appliance from and it works fine. No Linux knowledge required as it's all web based. Total integration into our AD without any problems. It's quite old now.

We recently bought a HP NAS Appliance running Windows Storage OS. Again no problems integrating into our AD. Both were seamless. We paid about UKP1,500 for 750GB usable.

You would only need Linux knowledge if you want to build your own server. Then, you will need to get your head around SAMBA and, as BuckWeet pointed out, WinBind. Getting SAMBA right is a non-trivial task and might be more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks heaps for your replies. I will have a go at what you suggested.
