I've recently installed Mandrake 8.2 on this machine. It's a AMD Atholon 950 Mhz 512 mb ram and the M.B. has the Sis 730 chipset.

The problem is whenever I attempt to connect to the internet or my email account via my old hayes 288 external modem-- only linux compatible modem I have at the moment- though it's been an old warrior always works with most everything-- the system crashes and it requires a hard boot to restart it. I've tried changing the Xconfiguration as some had suggested that but still same problem.. any clues as where I should look? Thanks

Is this incedent definately related to the modem? If so, have you tried updating drivers?

Thanks for the reply,
I'm not sure it's modem related. but possibly this modem has always worked well with Linux boxes in the past..
and it works well on another box I think it is something in Mandrake and the Chip set but can't put my finger on it.
Thanks for the reply.
Dave
