I am new to linux, and was just wandering if you peoples had any links to really good linux sites. they can be for downloading programs, anything really. but mostly, Linux how to's. I need them to answer several questions

thanks.

here are my two biggest questions:

can you change a users/root pasword?
can you save settings in the xwindows enviroment?
theEclipse
eclipse_web@hotmail.com
robacarp.webjump.com
**-Trying to build a documentation of a Javascript DOM, crossbrowser, of course. E-mail me if you know of any little known events and/or methods, etc.

yes, yes, and yes

Try the Linux Documentation Project (LDP), has almost all the documentation you want (I'm not sure what they're missing). <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> definitely want help from other users, so try LinuxNewbie (where I'm a Grasshopper). <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> a simple search for Linux at almost any online bookstore and you're bound to find something.

Most physical (brick and mortar) bookstores carry a few Linux/UNIX books on their shelves. You'll probably want to pick up a UNIX book since they're usually cheaper and you won't really lose anything as far as the learning experience since Linux is based off of UNIX anyway (actually, this is the preferred method by many UNIX people that have since moved to Linux). Most, if not all new UNIX books deal with Linux a little bit anyway.

As far as changing passwords, passwd should do the trick.

Customizing X is a something that is beyond the scope of this forum (i.e. it would take too long to explain). You should find enough material on the LDP.
REH
hawkdogg@crosswinds.net
<a href= by Linux
Learn Linux and Leave out the Windows :)

Favourite Linux related links of the moment:

<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> - not exclusively Linux, but a lot of Linux news coverage.

<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> - Linux software announcements nicely categorised. Look here for the very latest announcements. Most of the main package authors seem to post here first.

<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> - From the makers of TUCOWS, a more newbie friendly download site. Think TUCOWS for linux.

<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> - General linux hompage

<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> - The Linux magazine with lots of online articles :)

Hope these help.

Sorry, I misread your second question. You usually can save the setting in X, but it really depends on your window manager. What are you using? KDE? Gnome? If you're using either of those, then just get into the configuration panel (usually by right clicking and going to the background option) and just play around, you likely won't hurt your system. The menus are very intuitive and don't require a lot of explaining.
REH
hawkdogg@crosswinds.net
<a href= by Linux
Learn Linux and Leave out the Windows :)
