I would like to ask if anyone has implemented Linux in an Interenet Service Provider environment. I was also wondering as to how many users a single server can support and what types of directory technologies are available?

I work with NT servers, NDS for NT as well.

I used to work for an ISP where the web and radius (Dialin) servers were redhat linux. The radius server worked well, we had scripts to add and remove users and stuff, as well as being able to watch log files (tail -f logfile). The number of users a server can support depends on the server and load on the server. I don't know about what software is avalible, but I'd imagine it's like the rest of the linux software avalible and it's pretty good. I don't know too much of the technical implementation behind it, but I do know that from a semi-technical users standpoint the linux was very easy to use and had to be rebooted LESS often than NT (he he)

I'm working for a communications company and we also have data centers, acting as ISPs for different customers. We run solaris as well as RedHat and there are no complaints about the QoS so far. the searchmachine Google is also powered by linux servers, and they actually have a real lot of hits each day. If you plan to set up something like a linux powered ISP, make sure not to be too greedy with equipment and invested some time in points like load-balancing and clustering.
