Depending on the software and other configuration options on the server, it is probally doing a reverse lookup on your IP address, and if you are on a DSL or other address that is not set up in a reverse lookup DNS zone, then it will try ... try ... try and finally give up and let you in anyway.
You should check the documentation of the server package you are using on how to disable reverse lookups.
