Hi, can anyone suggest a Linux email solution (Open Exchange?) that will allow me to extract user and password information from Active Directory and keep this synchronised so the users don’t need more than one password as that would be far to much to ask of them.

Thanks.

Ok so e.g Sendmail or SUSE will query AD and fetch all user account details using LDAP or is that upto Outlook to send the correct details to the email server?

Thanks.

Both. Outlook will send login information with the POP or SMTP request. The server will validate it against the directory server.

Normally, your SMTP, POP and IMAP services will use local authentication (/etc/passwd, /etc/shadow). You can use PAM to change that behaviour so that it will authenticate against another system, such as LDAP or a database.

The places to start would probably be for the LDAP parts, and for the PAM parts. Some or all of it might be installed; I believe that both openldap and pam are installation options but might not be in a default set.

Ok i'll look into them.

Thanks.

Ximian connector just went GPL, maybe that would help? It's available as source now with rpms to follow May 14.
