Let's say that I have a domain abc.com. I want to specify that another system named xyz in this domain is also a nameserver for this domain. In my /var/named/abc.com.zone, I have the following entries:

abc.com. IN SOA ns.abc.com. root.xyz.abc.com. (...
......)
abc.com. IN NS ns.abc.com. //nameserver 1
abc.com. IN NS xyz.abc.com. //nameserver 2

if I want to use short cuts, what short cut can I use for abc.com., or for xyz.abc.com. ?

Yup, thats the right idea for the name servers.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by shortcuts, but did you know that as well as having "server.abc.com." ommitting a dot at the end of the string will cause the zone to be appended
eg:
"server1.abc.com." is same as "server1"

alse use the @ symbol as the "origin", from your example @ = abc.com. So the line could be:

@ IN NS ns

(the same also applies to other types of record, like MX and A etc)
