Is there a disk compression tool for Linux? I'm using a 500 meg HDD and once Linux is installed it doesn't leave much room for anything else.

Hi,

While there's lots on compression utilites (tar, bzip2, etc.) there's nothing really in wide use for transparently compressing whole filesystems. Probably the closest is zlibc but it doesn't work on executables --> .

Have a look at the saving space howto which may help generally --> .

With 500 mb, probably a very minimal install is in order.
No xface or a minimal xface like icewm, and this install
will definitely be time-consuming to admin. i have restricted space on my work machine and just writing cron jobs, different scripts for compression, etc..is a pain.
what do you need to do with this install?
