Hi,

I tryed to install both Debian and Ubuntu (with kernel 2.6.xx) in a PC with a P4R800-VM motherboard.. It just hung on the first menu (installer), plop! FC4 install fine.

Debian run good with kernel 2.4.xx but no network card is found (3com 3c920B).

Anyone have seen this before? some workaround?

(anyway, I'm installing FC4 right now, but I would like to know what's going on)

Cheers.

I don't know much about this and I'm lazy, but either way we need to know more than just the motherboard to maybe have an idea of why it hangs.
It .. *sounds* like a RAM problem, but if FC4 installs through without hanging, that's probably not it.

And when you say 'hang', you mean that keyboad and mouse stopped responding?

-Haben sie fosforos?
-No tiengo caballero, but I have un briquet.

yes, when I say "hung" I mean it stop responding, it does nothing, can't write, "num lock", "caps lock" do not respond...

I just installed FC4 and it runs fine, everything is working, the problem is with debian and ubuntu (using kernel 2.6.xx) -I like Ununtu/Debian more than FC-. Now, FC4 is running kernel 2.6.xx, so I'm wondering "what's going on?".

Thanks for your answer.

Cheers.

It sounds like outdated kernel modules are being used by the installer. FC4 installs fine because the release schedule allows for updates to be incorporated as required, I assume.

The 3Com 3c920B should work with the 3c59x module. They are essentially the same. The 3c920x is an on-board NIC which is compatible with the 3c90x/3c59x add-on cards.

You might need to make some driver disks for the Ubuntu install.

I had a similar problem with installing SLES 9 x86_64 (SuSE) on a Abit AV8 mobo. Everything worked except the on-board LAN, via_velocity. The CD had the source code to make the module but the silly thing wouldn't compile. So now I'm running FC4 x86_64 without any problems.

I want SLES 9!!

Oh well...

the 3c59x module didn't work for me... the main problem was the kernel 2.6.xx of debian/ubuntu, they simply hung!

Anyway, I'm running FC4 now and work perfect, but -as you- I want Debian or Ubuntu :(

Cheers.

Try using the net install of Debian. I know that the net install actually uses 2.4.x kernel, and then you have to build your 2.6 kernel yourself. I had to do that because I have a serial ata hdd, and so I had to use IDE emulation in the 2.4.x and then build 2.6.x and set the fstab to /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/hda1. It's probably a similar error with your install.

I already tryed net install (in a matter of fact, I always use this one). Anyway, both the IDE/ATA and ACPI issue makes sense!
