I have a small LAN run by an NT Server as a PDC. I just installed Calder Linux 2.2 and what to use it as a WEB-Server and my LAN. I have Samba starting at boot, successully (I think, got a .mac file on the LINUX box anyway), join the dom with the command smbpasswd -j <DOM> -r <DOMPC>. Altered at lot of the smb.conf settings. Turned on encrytion and set the password file to /etc/samba.d/smbpasswd. Created the password file with mksmbpasswd </etc/passwd> smbpasswd. Created the users public directory and rebooted. Problem is I still can't see the LINUX box from another workstation in the domain. The NT Server Manager, indicates its still not a valid workstation or server.

I very frustrated at this point, I would appreciate any help or suggestions on this subject. I even thought about getting a newer iso and starting over. if I recall, Samba allows client PC to connect to the linux Server box not vice versa, but i could be wrong. Have you taken a look at the "DOMAIN_MEMBER.txt" file supplied with Samba? If you got Samba in source format, it should be in the "docs" directory of the source tree. If you installed a RPM or similar, take a look in /usr/doc/samba*/docs/textdocs

This document describes how to bring a Samba server into an existing NT domain. The document starts with:

"In order for a Samba-2 server to join an NT domain, you must first add the NetBIOS name of the Samba server to the NT domain on the PDC using Server Manager for Domains."

This sounds like it might me what you need to do. Take a look at the document for more details. (It's a little too large to post here in it's entirety.) kb244 - It appears you might be correct, I can see all the machines in the domain from Samba with smbclient -L <PDC>. I was also able to monut a print with smbclient //<NetBios>/<Sharename Printer.

I am switching to a newer version of Linux, maybe that will clear up my issues.

Thanks for the info...

AndyBo - I have read that document and followed the steps. Maybe I missed something, I'll take another look while the new iso downloads.

Thanks
