I am trying to run backups of shares using NT2000 backup exc version 8.0, but am unable to see these share to backup. Vertias has told me to enable remote service but this has not resolved the problem ........ any suggestion gratefully recieved.

I don't think you can backup shares, you have to define them again in backup exec. Then they will be available under user defined shares.

I had to install samba on linux to get this to work.

I have already create a user defined share, but when I attempt to enter a user & password I get the following msg

backup exec could not attach you to this device, you may already be logged in with a different username & password.

Any suggestion gratefully recieved.

Hi Funstur,

The first thing I would do is upgrade to 8.5 (free upgrade from 8.0)

2. Download and Install the latest Unix Agent

Unix Agent v5.01 revision 5.032 (NLS EFGS) for BENW & BENT

Make sure your version of Linux matches the below, see the Linux section. (as found in the above link)

Unix Platform (x86) Version
SCO UNIXWare 1.x, 2.01, 7.x
SCO UNIX 3.x, 4.x,
SCO Open Server r.5 v5.0.0
Solaris 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7/7.0, 2.8/8.0
SunOS 4.1x, 5.3, 5.4
Interactive 3.2
LINUX Red Hat 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2
LINUX S.u.S.E 6.02, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.0
LINUX Mandrake 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 7.0
LINUX Caldera 1.3, 2.0, 2.2, 2.3
TurboLinux 4.0

Unix Platform (Sparc) Version

Solaris 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7/7.0, 2.8/8.0
SunOS/Solaris 4.1x

Unix Platform (HP) Version
HPUX 10.20
NOTE: HPUX 9.05+, 10.01, 10.10 are no longer supported in Unix agent 5.031 and higher.

Unix Platform (RS6000/PowerPC) Version
AIX 3.2.5, 4.1

After bringing the platform to this level, troubleshooting should be easier. Hope this helps
