Hi.I have Red Hat 8.0 on an laptop. 800MHz 128 Ram. When I leave machine on for a while it locks up. do I need a screen saver (although some default one comes on) to keep this from happennig. Is there a setting? or is it a memory prob?
Have you tried to ping it (if you're on a network)? It may not be dead.. just not accepting input cause of a possibly bad program.
For some reason, I'm thinking it's on the lines of APM or ACPI. Usually, bas commands, or badly written firmware causes this sort of thing to happen. Please let Tek-Tips members know if their posts were helpful.
If your machine seems to get sluggish run the top command to get an idea of the load. You might find that there is something causing a drain on the system, which can result in a sudden lockup. Also if you run ps -aux can you see anything that is unusual. John D. Saucier

No. When I come back to the machine the screensaver picture just sits there. moving the mouse or keyboard input does nothing. I have to power off in order to get running again.
