I have a Linux 7 web/email server that as stopped accepting incoming email? The sender does not receive an error message back, so it like the email is being lost completely.

Tis first started happening a couple of months ago, when an account would get saturated with email. On funny ting I noticed is that when I purged the email, 255 messages were present. Once I purged, the email server would start accepting email again. But now, the 10 or so accounts on the system are free of any email and the server will not accept any incoming email. Nor does the sender ever get back an error/warning message to let them know the server is unavailable?

The web server is operating just fine. Also, this server as been in operation for a good 6+ years and I have performed no configuration changes in that time - so very odd what is happening now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Look in /var/spool/mail and /var/spool/mqueue. Are there any really, really big files? Other than that I'd have to suspect your configuration has something to do with it. Does /var/log/maillog give you any hints?

sure enough it was a disk space issue - mucho thanks!

If this happens consistently, you should consider setting up a cron job to e-mail you the results of a "df -h" command to show available disk space.
