Hi Guys..
This is for all the Linux Gurus out there...I just joined a new organization and was thrown into managing a mail server.which was running Linux Version 6.2 ...

I have a good windows background and this was a challenge I took on...I managed to learn how to create/delete accounts and passwords...but then other projects took over and as the server was wroking fine I did not mess with it...

Now with the email viruses like SoBig, we were concerned if the mail server could be affected and if so if there was a way to check that. Also I was wondering how easy was it to upgrade to the latest version of Linux (9.0??).

Any help pointers references would be appriciated..
thanks
sid

Whether or not it was affected depends on how you use the word.

Can SoBig affect the mail server by infecting it? No. Sobig is Mi¢$oft-specific.

Can SoBig affect the mail server by causing clients using that mail server to place a greater message load on the server? Yes.

Your statement "Linux 6.2" is ambiguous. Version 6.2 of what distribution?

Sidrp, regarless of whichever distibution of Linux you're running (most likely Red Hat), I would strongly recommend you NOT do an in place upgrade of any v6.2 to 9.0 distro. Thats too much of a jump, especially when a major kernel upgrade will happen (2.2 to 2.4) in the process. Thats like trying to upgrade WinNT 3.5 to Win2003. Your asking for trouble if you do it. If the server's only role is as a mail server, it shouldn't be too difficult to do a clean install of RH90 and move all of your backed up data over.
