I purchased this so I could set up a VPN for users to connect to from the internet. Turns out to not quite work as advertised....luckily i saved the box, and it is going back...anyone else have a way to setup a VPN that actually worked as advertised? Here is the log from the Linksys Live Chat...not very helpful but funny.....BTW, I am george, the tech support is Rodmar Calaor...
940am...
george: I purchased this router for one reason, so that my brother in San Antonio could vpn into my network. I have spent over a day trying to make it work, no luck. Many tech forums have the same issues with this model. All I want to do is allow a vpn connection thru the internet. My brother is using the xp vpn client. How can i make this work? please......
george: hello?
Rodmar Calaor: Yes.
george: can you call me and help make this thing work?
Rodmar Calaor: All you have to do is to open the service ports on the router to let it passthrough your vpn connection.
george: ok...how do i do that?
Rodmar Calaor: I believe i cannot do that, you are only assigned for the chat session onlyl.
Rodmar Calaor: What is the vpn application you are using?
george: my brother is using the standard vpn connection client in xp to connect to my linksys vpn router.
Rodmar Calaor: The one that you got is not a vpn router.
george: it is suppose to allow up to 50 vpn connections thru the internet, that is the only reason i bought it.
george: it states on the box...VPN Broadband Router
george: hello?
Rodmar Calaor: Is that a WRV54G or WRT54g router?
george: it is a wrv54g model
Rodmar Calaor: Ok. You have a vpn router.
george: ok, so now how do i make it work?
Rodmar Calaor: On the vpn tab of the router configuration page.
george: yes
Rodmar Calaor: For the local secure group: would be the ip address of the computer you want to connect for the vpn.
george: I am not sure i understand....
george: i want to have someone (like you) from the internet vpn into my network.
Rodmar Calaor: We are not allow to do that.
george: you are not allowed to do what? all i want is for this thing to work as advertised.....
Rodmar Calaor: configuring computer to create vpn to connect to your network.
Rodmar Calaor: But the only thing that i can help you is to configure the router for vpn connection.
george: ok fine, lets at least try to make it work before i send it back to the vendor and tell them what a piece of crap it is...
Rodmar Calaor: Are you still on the vpn tab.
george: yes
Rodmar Calaor: How many computer do you have in your network?
george: five
Rodmar Calaor: ok.
Rodmar Calaor: subnet : 255.255.255.0 for the local secure group.
george: got it
Rodmar Calaor: For the remote secure gateway ip : 1.1.1.1
george: ok
Rodmar Calaor: Subnet : 255.255.255.0
george: do you mean remote secure group or gateway?
george: there is no subnet for the remote secure gateway
Rodmar Calaor: Group.
george: got it
george: ok
Rodmar Calaor: For the remot secure gateway : 1.1.1.1
george: ok, done
Rodmar Calaor: And the rest should match with the configuration of the vpn client computers.
george: for the local secure group i have 192.168.254.0, is that ok?
Rodmar Calaor: What is the local ip address of your router?
george: 192.168.254.1
Rodmar Calaor: The local secure group you assigned that's ok.
george: ok...so save it and try a connection?
Rodmar Calaor: Are going to connect this one to another vpn router?
george: no....xp vpn client..
Rodmar Calaor: You should know the WAN IP address of the vpn client computer.
george: i do , but how am i going to know all 50 salespeople's wan ip address?
Rodmar Calaor: YOu should know it.
Rodmar Calaor: Because cannot connect to them if you don't know it.
Rodmar Calaor: And make sure they are on the static wan ip.
george: they do not have static, most people on the internet have dhcp from their isp....this is not going to work very well...lets continue on anyway to see if we can make it connect...i have his wan ip, now what?
Rodmar Calaor: Then put that one on the remote secure gateway.
george: ok....
Rodmar Calaor: But the configuration on the remote vpn client, we don't support it.
Rodmar Calaor: And make sure you do have same configuration with encryption and athentication.
george: they are both disabled....
george: still no connection...
Rodmar Calaor: Who is you isp?
george: one source...
george: lets just call it quits....this is not going to do what i need.....
Rodmar Calaor: They should know the WAN IP address that you have, so that they could configure their connection pointing to your network.
george: i cannot set up 30 or so ip's that are dynamic anyway...
george: this unit does not work as advertised......
george: thank you for your help...i will be returning this unit.
george: goodbye
george: and thanks again
Rodmar Calaor: Thank you for chatting with us today.
