I have configured the wrt54g as a dhcp server, and the wap access point as a wireless repeate with the mac address of the lan router. This is my problem, when I unplug the cat5 connecting the router and access point after initial configuration, I no longer can get into the access point, hence it no longer functions as part of the wireless network. The ssid and the channel are the same but this should no matter as the ap is set up as a wireless router. Any suggestions?

I had the wrong mac address. It should have been the wireless mac address.
