I recenly purchased a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router. After setting up the static IP, DHCP, and Wireless sections of the router it didn't work. But by mimicing the MAC address of the computer the cable internet used to be hooked up too it worked. However...

The wireless laptop (Dell Inspiron 8500), and my desktop have internet and work but I can't get them to share any files amongst eachother. They can't even ping one another witout a "Request Timed out" error. What can I do to get them to see one another in the network?

Both are using the network 192.168.1.0. 255.255.255.0. The DHCP assigns 192.168.1.101 to the laptop and 192.168.1.100 to the desktop because it booted first. The router is the default 192.168.1.1.

Any ideas? -Marshall

Yes, I have the Trend Micro - Internet Security package (Virus scanner, Spam protection, Web filtering, Firewall, e-mail virus scan) on both machines. But even when I turn them off I still can't ping one another. The built in firewalls on XP are off as well. -Marshall

Are you able to see the computers in My Network Places? I have a feeling that when you turned off the Trend Micro something may still be running. Can you disable it from starting up with the system and then reboot your PCs?

Hey, I am a networking engineer and I have that Router. here are some things to check.
1. check the domain/workgroup make sure they are the same this will allow you to see the other. you can also ping from the setup page. try doing that vs. the command prompt.
2. make sure your securities aren't conflicting and if you have mac filtering make sure the desktop is on the same filters as the wireless and wired. this will help make the others visible..
3. can you see them when you go to your network connections and check the microsoft network under the entire network?
These are just some things to look at before messing around with the firewall / virus soft ware.. another youmay want to do is try connecting to the router with both to make sure you can see eachother while hard wired in then move on to the problem of wireless to wired... and vice versa. Good luck!
