I was messing around last night with my Linksys WRT54G wireless security settings when I got to the point that of giving up I decided to restore the defaults and get things back to where they were yesterday.
Needless to say that didn't work and I have zero functionality with this router now. Even a wired connection does not connect to the internet.
Here's my setup.

I have a Netopia 2241N ITEL modem that seems to be working properly. When I connect the modem to the PC I get access (that is the rig I am using now to write this).

When I connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the Internet port on the WRT54G I get an Internet light indicator. There is also a light indicating the port that is connected to the PC.

I have DSL through Iowatelecom. This is DHCP and NOT PPPoE as I confirmed with them earlier this morning.
So the settings I have now are:

Automatic Configuration - DHCP
Router Name: WRT54G
Host Name: [confirmed this is not required by my ISP]
Domain Name: [confirmed this is not required by my ISP]
MTU: Auto
Size: 1500 (grayed out)

Local IP 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

DHCP Server : Enabled
Starting IP Address: 192.168.1.100
Max DHCP users: 50

0.0.0.0 for all Static DNS and WINS

when I check the status here is what is returned:

Firmware Version: v1.02.7 build 011, Jul. 27, 2009
Router Name: WRT54G
Host Name:
Domain Name:
Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
IP Address: 127.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0

Ipconfig /all from the PC gets:

I've searching and mucking around for 7 hours and I'm at a loss as to why the internet connection is not getting passed through the router to the PC with a wired connection.

Any suggestions before I try out a new router?

It could be hardware or firmware. Have you tried Pinging various IP addresses for connectivity? Traceroute? Replaced suspect patch cords? You might try re-updating the firmware. You show links on the WAN & LAN sides. Do they show any traffic?

You said you connected the modem to the enet port? it should be connected to the wan port of the router, if you are using the router as a router.

is the dsl modem a modem or a modem + router? because if that is the case, there is some more configuration that needs to be done.

I have tried swapping out cables and that wasn't the issue. I'm not sure what you mean by showing links but I have tried to ping outside with the router connected and I get time outs. Pinging my printer I get a response however. I did update the firmware earlier this morning.

The cords are pretty sure setup correctly. There's only one port for the incoming from the modem and that's where it's been working for 3+ years. The other 4 ports are the LAN and I have the PC, Printer, and PS3 connected there. I've tried different ports for the the PC to check the router for a faulty port.

The modem is simply a modem - no router functionality.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I should have payed attention to how things looked when it all was working. Does the linksys status look right? 0.0.0.0 for Default Gateway? Once I get this working I'll take better notes ;)

The router if it is getting its IP from the modem is pointing to itself (127.0.0.1)
Have you tried rebooting the modem and then after a minute the router?
Have you tried setting the router back to defaults?

If your DSL connection is DHCP the router should get its WAN assignments from the ISP. The config you posted above does not show any WAN assignments! What I see appears to be default. Are you getting a LINK indication with the patch cord plugged in between the modem and the router? For your DNS you can populate with the DNS server of your choice, or the ISP will assign their IP address when they issue an IP address for the WAN. Until that occurs, you won,t go anywhere. Can you PING the 54G using IP 192.168.1.1? If yes, then at least the Linksys is responding to Pings on the LAN.

You might want to review the user guide for the 54G.

Can you plug a pc in directly to the modem and browse the internet? If so what Ip address is the modem handing out to you?

I went out and bought another linksys router and had no problem getting it working. Checked the settings against the old router and everything seemed the same. I'm still guessing it was a hardware issue. However I found later when I tried mucking around with the settings again that the modem was a modem router/combo as rclarke250 suggested it might be. After a lot of trial and error I got the modem/router into a bridge mode and the system working great for my purposes. I still have to attempt the old router to finally rule that our as dead. Thanks very much for the ideas and suggestions.
