At work I have been charged with getting a wireless laptop up and running. I know a little bit about networks but obviously not enough. Unfortunately, I have the feeling my job is riding on this. Below is the explanation of my problem.
They have a high-speed cable Internet connection that comes into a Cisco Secure Pix 506. From there it is connected to a Cisco UBR 900 router and from there the connection goes out to the workstations with static IP addresses.
Out in the Parts Dept., they want a wireless connection for one laptop and a wired connection for one desktop. They bought a Linksys Wireless-G Boardband 2.4GHz router. When I attach the cable from the Cisco 900 to the Internet port on the Linksys, the wireless card is connected to the Access Point, but can not see the Internet. Nor can the desktop access the Internet.
When I put the cable in one of the other 4 ports, and one to the desktop, the desktop can then access the Internet. However, the wireless card still can not access the Internet. The laptop is about 2 feet from the wireless router and shows 100% signal strength with and excellent connection.
I have tired setting the IP addresses to static as well as to DHCP, but still no Internet. When I hook the cable directly from the Cisco UBR 900 router to the laptop (bypassing the Linksys Wireless) I can connect to the Internet, so I know the cable connection is good.
I have tried a Netgear Wireless PC Card as well as a Linksys Wireless-B adapter. Both of these adapters work fine from home.
The desktop is running Windows XP and the laptop is running 2000 Pro. I have downloaded all the latest hardware updates, and drivers for all equipment involved.
I don’t know what else to try, and I’m pulling my hair out! If anyone has suggestions or needs further explanations, please contact me, or post here. I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
