I have a Linksys model# BEFW11s4. It's a Wireless AP + 4 port Router/switch. The hard wired works fine, I have 2 XP hoem PC's and my Xbox connected to it adn they are all working fine.

However, when I activate the wireless feature of the router I can't get my laptop with wifi to connect to it. When I do a scan it shows me the SSID "Linksys". Then in the router setup I enable WEP, and set the phrase and choos the key I want to use. Then I enter the key in the wifi setup for the SSID. it will not connect. I have been sitting right next to the AP with the laptop, and ir still won't do it. I have disabled the option to let XP Pro manage the wireless connection, and then I tried to set it up with the intel software, but when I do a scan for an AP with it, it doesn't find anything.

I have connected to the wifi at my work, with very little problem. I can even connect to the unsecured wifi signal running loose in my neighborhood and surf the web.(very slow 1Mbps)

I just can't figure out what the problem is. I'm starting to think that maybe the router is the problem ,but it is broacasting the SSID, so that leads me to think it's working. I have also changed the channel from 1 through 11 and tried each of those. I also disabled WEP and tried to access, still nothing.

My router doesn't support WPA, I have been trying to get the firmware update for my router, but the Linksys FTP server times out or doesn't respond at all.

any other suggestions?

Thanks!

When you enter the WEP key, try doing it in the properties dialog of the wifi card in the laptop, not in the properties dialog of the network connection.

Another thought - disable WEP - does it work then?

Another thought - try using a static IP address in the laptop - does it work then?

I couldn't get tha link to work - Bcastner

I have tried disabling WEP, but still nothing.

I will try entering it in the properties dialog of wifi card also - IFRs

thanks

ok I updated the notebook with all ther MS updates. it will connect to the network , according to the notebook. However, in the router setup, the DHCP table doesn't show an IP address for the notebook. I am not able to connect to the internet either.

and I can't ping the router...so obviously it isn't connected....GRRRRR!

The notebook say sit has an "excellent" connection to "linksys" which is my SSID

GOT IT!!!

I disabled WEP and it connect ans surfs the web, I guess I'll just use it like that until I have more patience to tinker with it, and get WEP up.

thanks

Congrats !!

I had trouble with WEP using two year old IBM thinkpads and new Linksys wifi router. My solution was to not use WEP but instead to NOT broadcast the SSID and use MAC filtering to keep out interlopers. Back when I was struggling, I'm pretty sure I could get the WEP to work if I modified the NIC properties instead of the Network Connection properties, but it seemed not to "stick" sometimes.
