I have a VPN set up between 2 Linksys routers, a 54 and a 41. The connection stays up no problems. I have static routing tables in both routers and can see and explore the shares on each of the computers at each end of the VPN....EXCEPT....one particular folder on the 41 side on 1 particular machine. It shows up as a share but it will not allow me to view its contents. It gives me the dreaded "...no longer available" error. I have changed folder security preferences to EVERYONE, have checked and unchecked parent propogation but cannot seem to explore that folder. I can explore shares I have set up in its subfolders. It seems to me that it occurs when the contents of the folder have many files or large files that it has a proble....but that is just a guess. I have eliminated the share then reinitiated it again with no luck. The computer on the 54 end of the VPN also has the same folder in the same 2000 PRO OS and can be viewed perfectly. The error that comes up after about 1 minute of thinking is "....NO LONGER AVAILABLE" but I can then explore other folders on the same machine with no problem.

The Event LOg doesn't show any errors related to this - best I can tell. Does anyone know a solution or a place to begin troubleshooting this...I HAVE to map to this particular folder and must be able to connect to it.

UPDATE...

I created 3 shared testing folders. #1 folder was empty. #2 folder had a 1MB file in it. #3 Folder has many files in it. All 3 of these folders were created at the same time in the same tree.

--C:\--
-----Testing (empty)
-----Testing2 (1MB file)
-----Testing3 (many files)

Folder 1 could be browsed immediately to show it had nothing in it.

Folder 2 opened up after a few seconds to show the single 1MB file in it.

Folder 3 gave me the error message. "Testing3 is not accessible. The specified network name is no longer available.

This is the only PC that has this problem. It is on WIN2K PRo

This sounds like an MTU problem. You can change the MTU on a specific adapter on a specific computer rather than tampering with the MTU settings on a router (which would affect all the traffic through the router).

First, download this file:

Once you have that file, run it (it does not need to be “installed”). A box will come up. Select your Ethernet adapter that you use for this VPN connection from the Adapter settings dropdown box. Once it is selected, type in 1392 in the MTU box. Click Save, then click Exit. Restart the computer and try to access the shared folder. If you are still unable to access the folder, try to lower the MTU even further. Try an unreasonably low setting, such as 750, save, exit, restart and retry. If it works, you can tweak the settings even further. The most desirable setting would have a high number in the MTU box and would be stable.

Be sure to restart the computer after each change to the MTU. This is a registry setting and requires a restart of the computer after each change.

If this solution doesn't work, go ahead and put the MTU back up to 1392.

Good luck and post back...

Deeno,

You were right on the money. I opened up the program, changed the MTU to 1392 saved, rebooted, and everything came up perfectly.

I should have posted a request about a week ago to save me all the time and frustration. I saw threads about changing the MTU to 1392 on the router but not on the NIC.

Thanks!
