I have a 6 port linksys switch connecting our main building with the Sales/Finance building accross the street. Every once in a while, the Sales/Finance building loses connectivity with the main building. The problem is fixed when I power cycle the linksys switch. It's almost like the switch is freezing up and when I unplug it and plug it back in, everything is fine....for a month or so, and then the same thing happens. It used to happen about twice a week. Anyone know what's causing this? Thanks,

-Dan B.

how are you conectiong the two buildings ?

if its copper cable what are the distances involved and how does the cable get from building to building ?

I've replaced about 4 linksys router/switches that I sold in the past 2 years for doing exactly that. I'm not sure what the deal is, but when replaced with a different switch the problem didn't come back. Doesn't help much for troubleshooting, but I don't think I'm buying any more of the product.

It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

I had similar problem at a hospital so I tested the line with an AC monitor by Tasco Inc (Englewood, CO). This device monitors the line for overvoltage (130 VAC) and undervoltage (100 VAC) and logs a light for the anomaly. I put a UPS on the line and, 'voila', no more problems.

If you know the power is good, per Daron’s suggestion, swap out the unit with a known working model and see it persists. Mass produced electronics today, although cheap and powerful, still have some occasional quirks.

Hope this helps.

we are using regular cat5 cable and it's no more than 150ft long. The cable goes out to the telephone pole, up, and over, and back down, and on the end of that cable there is a small female uplink port, where a patch cable connects the uplink to the linksys.

Is any other department having the same problem?
Are you using an outdoor rated cable where it is exposed?
How is the cable lashed or secured?

What can I say, I like to ask questions when troubleshooting...

Nope, the only dept having probs is the one that's using the linksys. I'm pretty sure it's an outdoor rated cable; we had someone come and put it in for us, but I didn't work here at the time... how do I find out? I can see the cable running accross the street with other wires, but it's by itself and not touching any other wires. As far as it being secured I don't know.

I would be worried about stray voltages (lightning) on an unprotected cable outside like that.

Where, or how should the cable be? Shouldn't they have done that when they installed it? I mean, if that is the case (stray voltages), shouldn't it have been protected from the start. How is it normally done?

The cable is black, so it might be coaxial. If it's not 140', its very close to it. I'm going to check tomorrow again, and if possible, take the little white box off the end of the cable where the female port is. Then I'll know for sure. I don't know the max distance for coaxial off hand, but isn't it more than 10baseT?

I wasnt trying to imply that it might be coax...outdoor rated UTP is black.

and Yes typically 10Base5 (500M) and 10Base2 (185M) can run further than 10BaseT (100M).
