I have a BEFSR41 router on my cable modem. Without the router inline I get 1.616 download speeds.
With the router inline I get .800 to .900 speeds.
What's going on?

I am not sure how you tested this. I can assure you that your experience is not the normal one.

Run the "Tweak" test at DSLR in both scenarios more than once: with and without the BEFSR41 installed.

Use the DRTCP tool to set your RWIN and MTU values appropriately as a result of the test.

Finally, check your Linksys router MTU settings: if set to a manual value, it must be absolutely in accordance with the suggested values of the Tweak test above.

I'm noy sure what rwin means but I tested 3 times each way.
The results:

With Router: 6420 6420 6420

Without: 17520 17520 17520

What Next?

Good.

RWIN is the receive buffer size. Windows tends to set this too low.

Your Tweak results would show you an optimal range for this setting, and the DRTCP freeware utility linked on the page could be downloaded to adjust the value.

But your results are indicative of an autonegotiation failure, or the use of the wrong cable, or a manual setting for 100/Full Duplex.

My guess is that the issue is the first one: your modem and the router (BEFSR41 has 10 mbs/Full fixed WAN port; except for Version #3 (relatively brand new) that can do both 10/100, and your autonegotiation is failing.

Purchase, dig up, borrow, an inexpensive switch. Plug modem into the switch. Plug the Linksys into the switch. The switch will handle power level differences, and most importantly, autonegotation logic between modem and the Linksys router to get you up to full speed.

Alternatives: Some have said with Motorola and Toshiba modems that you can take a 75' (foot) cable (excess length coiled) to connect the two devices and this resolves the issue without a switch.

Oliver60,

Please tell me how you are measuring your effective bandwidth.

And post here the results of an ipconig /all

You are nearly there. If you could, post the link generated by the DSLR Tweak Test so that I can see a little more detail of what is happening.

Finally, could you give (from the first page of the router setup screen) the firmware version and date?

Almost there.

Some thoughts:

. You results on the Tweak test would scale better if you specified 1500 and not 1.5 as your kbits/second value. But in any case your results with/without router yield within the limits of such tests, nearly identical results.

. You should check that your router firmware is completely up-to-date.
. You would know best, but have you considered cloning the MAC address of your NIC to the router under its Advanced features? As a rough guess, you are seeing authentication issues with your ISP. When your ISP router "sees" the MAC address of the router instead of for your account the MAC of your desktop lan adapter, you can have issues such as you are experiencing. Ask your ISP what MAC addresses it is showing for your account; register the lan adapter MAC with them; then "clone" that address to the router.

. At some later time you might want to reconsider your adapter settings for blackhold discovery, selelct ACKs and other issues, as your settings are not optimal at the moment, but unlikely to be the source of the problem you are now trying to resolve.

I finally got better rusults. I kept trying your suggestions
and when I changed the RWIN to 37960, I am now getting
speeds of 1460 to 1560. Thanks for the help.
Do I need to change blackhold, ACK, if I do what do
I need to change them to.

Thanks Again.
