Q:How do I get rid of the 1700/Sonicwall and just use the Linksys?

I am trying to fix our (my company's) router problem(s) (based on DSL). Some firm had installed a a Cisco 1700 router and then crossed that into a Sonicwall firewall, which then fed into a Tigerstack swith (24 port).

I bought a new Dell server based on Win 2003 Server software and tried to connect it up where the old server (DOA) had been connected. I unplugged the router/firewall (as the linksys RV082 has its own firewall) and tried to run the DSL line into the 'internet' port on the Linksys, then from the Linksys into the switch. The DSL line did not seem to 'fit' too great into the port on the Linksys router (clicked in after some minor effort) and the Linksys would not recognize the internet (obviously not the right connection size although the pin/head looks the same as the others)

After that failure, I ran the DSL line into the original Cisco 1700, and then from the 1700 to the Linksys. Now, the internet light on the Linksys lit up, but my server still could not find the DHCP info etc to connect (or even establish any connection). Finally, I hooked the 1700 back up to the Sonicwall, and then back to the switch (basically the original configuration). Of course the server found the info and got online fine at that point.

How do I get rid of the 1700/Sonicwall and just use the Linksys?

zuz,
The Lnksys box is setup for Ethernet connections, that is why when you ran an Ethernet cable from the Cisco 1700 Ethernet port to the Linksys it worked.

You will need to check with your DSL provider and see if they have a solution to take the DSL line you have to Ethernet - most home DSL does this with a DSL "Modem".

I would expect that your DSL line now connects to a modular port on the 1700 and the Ethernet port on the 1700 is connected to Ethernet port on the Sonicwall.

I hope this helps!
