I recently added the Linksys NR041 Cable/DSL router to my network to share my internet connection. Both computers are running XP Pro, the DSL modem is the Westell issued by Bellsouth. I can access the internet fine, but email has been an issue, specifically Yahoo. I had the Linksys tech on the phone and we tried to ping yahoo with the -f -l switches on port 1492 and got a bad response. So we tried port 1462 and got a good response, so I changed the default MTU in the router settings from 1492 to 1462. Still no joy on yahoo mail, I can get to my mail page but when I select the inbox icon it stalls. Any idea's how I can reconfigure the router to accept yahoo mail traffic. I did check the logs and it shows some traffic being blocked, but I'm not sure how to verify the IP's to confirm they're actually yahoo mail servers. TIA for any help!

This sounds like " PORT FOWARDING " needs to be enabled for PORT 1462 or 1492[/i]

MTU Is nothing to do with ports, it is the size of the packets to be transmitted. ---------------

Did this issue ever get solved? I'm having the same problem and would like to know the answer.

Thanks

In many cases you need to set a trigger on port 113.

Go to your router's setup, Advanced, Port Forwarding, and set trigger for port 113~113 113~113

try disabling the block wan request and ask your isp what is their mtu settings and input that in. if that does not work upgrade/reflash the firmware of your router..

The number in the ping command is not your MTU. You can use the ping command to get a good guess. If your ping succeeds with fragmentation at some number X, then add 38 for overhead and use that as your MTU value.

Note you need to change the MTU on the router as well as for the client. The MTU for the router is available on the Web-based setup pages. For the client there are lots of little utilities, I use the freeware DRTCP, available here:
Note you should ping for a little while at any setting before making a change. In rwholland's case that started this thread he got a good response at a ping of 1462, which suggests an MTU of 1500, the XP default on the client side for links greater than 128 kbs. (I personally would ping for a while on this one, DSL is almost always 1492 MTU).

To ping a site until you hit Ctrl-C to stop:
Start, Run, ping -t -lxxxx where xxxx = the size of the ping datagram to test.

I have this problem as well. I believe however it isn't an mtu issue. I believe it is a ports issue, Not sure how to fix it. If anyone has fixed this problem please respond, it would be a life save (or at least not so annoying to worry about). This occurs with hotmail as well.

I've tried to locate a port but that wasn't so successful. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Who knows.

Unclearmind,

I agree with you it is not an MTU issue, although it can play a role.

You should not have to open any ports other than the 113 trigger I mentioned above.

What you need to do is disable/modify your firewall settings in all likeliehood.

Try access without any firewall active. Some firewalls even if disabled from the notification tray icon are still active and need to be disabled through MSCONFIG and the machine rebooted.

If access succeeds, then adjust your firewall settings.

I use win 2k, and no firewalls whatsoever, the thing is it's only when the router is connected do I have these problems. Not sure what settings to change to allow it to work, but I've done numerous thigns and it still hasn't worked.

don't just guess..determine the ports...enable the access log on the router, then apply.. then check out your email.. naturally you'll get a problem.. after that check out the incoming access and outgoing access logs.. check out what ports are being blocked..after determining what ports then forward those ports or better yet just port trigger..

Unclearmind,

Linney made the point in a different forum that the system date and time are usually the problem with access. Though this does not sound as a perfect fit for your problem. The resources below may help:

Incorrect Date and Time seem to be a favourite cause of this.

the only thing is I can't find out what ports it is trying to access, I don't think it has to do with cookies though. I've looked for port monitors, but they didn't help to much, they update which ports are used, but when I use yahoo, it had like 10 different ports it seemed.

I found out it was the dsl model that was giving me trouble, I haven't had any trouble with it since I changed ISP's. Which would explain why I couldn't find a solution. Thanks for the help though!
