Linksys Network Setup Help 1

I am currently running a Linksys WRT45G Router to access the my cable modem for my laptop. This router is also connected to a desktop computer. I would like to setup a network to access the printer connected to this desktop. I have tried the wizard on both computers, but they do not recognize each other. I have file and printer sharing turned on for both. The workgroup name is the same on both. I know I am missing something simple, but cannot figure out what it is. Now the IP addresses are empty on both. They have been configured automatically. If someone would please (in idiot language LOL) spell out the steps to connect two or more computers over a network, I would really appreciate it. Oh, both computers are using Windows XP.
