HEllo Again
I am trying to connect to my office via our VPN.
I have the linksys BEFW11S4 router/wap which is hooked to my RCA CABLE INTERNET ACCESS MODEM.The VPN Launches and tells me I am connected but when I attempt to browse the network or pull in mail from the exchange server it does not work. I tested the VPN software on a dial up connection yesterday and it worked as it should. I was able to connect to the network and see all mapped drives and get my email. That would seem to tell me the VPN software is ok on Dial Up but what can be stopping it from working on my Comcast Cable Connection at home.

Any IDeas.

BTW what is the VPN software that your are using.. check this website if your VPN software is among these so you could open up the ports they use..
->
if its not there check what ports it is using..
1. your may want to access the setup page via
192.168.1.1..ADVANCE >> FILTERS then enable multipass, ipsec and pptp passthrough.. disabled BLOCK WAN REQUEST.. MTU = 1492.
2. if that would not work disabled multipass,ipsec,pptp..

3. MAC clone..( but you may have probable done that since your using COMCAST..

4. if that would not work DMZ the router. (just for diagnostics ) if that worked means that you may just have to open other ports..

5. still if that did not work.. connect direct to your modem..if that works try upgrading the firmware of the router...

6 Hope this helps... ( explained coz there are other VPN softwares on the market that require you to open ports on the router. since 11s4 ( aka 802.11b wireless access point with 4 port switch ) has built in NAT firewall that is why we need to open such ports..

BTW if all else fails contact the other side becaue they may have certain configurations that may require to to change the LAN IP of the router and its SUBNET mask...

GOOD LUCK

robros,

kennz provided a lot of things to check. What I would like you to focus on is making sure the MTU is set correctly for the VPN connection. For your cable connection the setting will default for the client to 1500, which is correct as far as it goes. But often VPN clients have greater overhead and seem to work better with a lower setting of around 1400 for MTU.

I use this utility to set client MTU:
Explore a lower MTU than your default of 1500. If you later post the VPN client software you are using, including Version information, for both ends of the connection, it would make it easier to provide specific advice to resolve your problem.

Best.

Thanks I am running the Cisco Vpn Client Ver 3.1
I have looked at the MTU Settings and it shows no value set
I can only guess that its 1500.I will attempt these settings changes and see what happens

ok since that is a cicso vpn client you just enable ipsec passthrough and just have pptp as diabled..

I have tryed above still I can now connect to the Exchange Server but I cannot see the DOMAIN. Seems to be running very slowly once connect.

robros,

enable the access log and check out what ports that are being used that are blocked.. after that open or forward those ports.. also disabled BLOCK WAN REQUEST..

also check out what lan ip address the other side has.. if you have the same lan segment-> change the lan ip of your router...

Thanks Will do So MUCH FOR PLUG AND PLAY.

Catch Me I AM FALLING

Plug and play works most only for cable internet connection.. regarding ports and firewalls and other advance configurations it really a neccessity to do some configurations..

I have tryed and tryed to get this wireless card to work and it does not I have seen other postings with the same problem which there does not seem to be a fix for.

Thinking I should purchase a differnt card to see if that will work.

check your wep settings. make sure that your signal is ok and also check if you have the same SSID.. and if still does not work try downloading a driver from the linksys website that usually works...

If this is the Version 4 WPC11 network pcmcia adapter card, it is my understanding that it will not work in your situation.

Linksys "is aware" of the problem. I did not see specific mention of it in the changelog, but linksys released a new driver for the card 6/6/03. You might try the newer driver and see if things improve.

Thanks for all the help with this
