I am trying to set up a linksys BEFSR41 router for a 3 computer network to share files and a dsl connection. The file sharing works fine , but i cannot get a connection to the internet. Every time I go throught the linksys setup and enter the PPPOe info i get the message "Local Area Network -A Network Cable Is Disconnected". No cables are disconnected and all have been tested. Im running XP and using a Sprint supplied Zyxcel P645ME+ modem. The modem and NICs, etc are working fine. I can ping everything and get a response (modem, router, other computers). Linksys tech support ran out of ideas and told me to replace the router but I have a feeling I will just be wasting a trip to have the same problem. Thanks in advance.

I suspect your router is not in bridge mode.

You could "Double NAT", although it is an inelegant solution.

To Double NAT:

1. Set the LAN IP of the Linksys to 192.168.10.1, you cannot use the default of 192.168.1.1 for the device.

Apply your settings. Ignore any error messages.
Hold in the reset button until the red diag lite comes on, all the lights flash, and the red diag lite goes off. Unplug the router for 30 seconds. Plug it back in.

Reboot your machine. To access the router you now need its new default by typing in your browser address bar: 192.168.10.1

Configure the router.

Note: All the machines will require a reboot to obtain their new IPs.

It would be far better to go to the Zyxel site and learn the menu settings to put the modem into pure bridge only mode and use the Linksys defaults afterwards.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Thanks for the idea. Everything is up and running. I put the modem in bridge mode and let XP set the network and dsl connection without using the Linksys setup. Working fine (crossing fingers).

I am glad it worked. I am especially glad you put the modem into bridge mode. You will find, albeit not easy, it much easier to play with the Linksys as a router than a double NAT situation as you had previously.

BTW, if you have version 1 or 2 of the router, the firmware was very recently updated on July 30, 2003. Version 3 of the router was updated on August 6, 2003. See the site ftp:\\ftp.linksys.com\befsr41\

Did not like my first link to the Linksys firmware site:
