My set-up is as follows: @home cable modem >Linksys 5 port workgroup hub > 3 PC's (A&B win98 and C ME) used to access the internet for a home business.
I have to bring two other machines, a Thinkpad Win98-"D" and desktop WinME-"E" into this LAN occasionally for data transfer and storage. I accomplish this by first disconnecting "C" from the hub then connecting it to a separate hub to which "D&E" are connected. I do this because the @home service only allows three addresses and when I hook a fourth computer to the service one of the original three is forced out.
To reduce the hassle, I bought a BEFSR11router. I'm hoping to set it up as follows: @home cable modem> Linksys 5 port workgroup hub> to "A", "B", and BEFSR11router's WAN port:Router's LAN port> to uplink 2nd hub> to "C" to "D" and "E"
I tried it initially with just one computer "C" hooked to the 2nd hub. I was able to access the router's configuration utility and upgrade the firmware but could not access the internet or email. I had a limited time window wherein I could be down so it was necessary to reset the cable modem to get back to normal. The cable company is of no help as they wont even support a hub beyond their basic service. I'm reluctant to try it again without some technical input.
Thanks in advance

I think you may have this a little out of order. You want the @home cable modem, then to the BEFSR11router(to route the ISP's packets), then to the 5 port hub, then you can plug any amount of pc's into your hub. A few notes though. Linksys 5 port workgroup hubs (some of them) are not hot swappable. If you unplug a node, then you have to reset the hub by powering it down before you will be able to access it again. I don't know if this is true for all of them but I know ours is like that and it's new. You want the router first after the cable modem because the router will let your ISP see only one ip address. This will allow you to have many simultaneous nodes plugged in on the inside and they should be given ip addresses by the router dhcp service. Does this help? Also be carefull with email. I noticed that at home I could not get to my mail server to get my mail by nameso I had to ping the mail server and enter the ip addresses manually in the email programs properties.
