Does anyone know the procedure for setting up pcAnywhere to be a host from behind a bFRS41 Linksys Cable/DSL router. I know it has something to do with ports. But I need the full detail if anyone has it???
I was looking for the same solution and came across this page on the Symantec.com web site. I'm not sure if this will help and I haven't tried it myself yet, but its worth a try. I'd like to know if you find another solution as well.
Does your router have a dynamic or static IP address? Linksys documentation says that you have to disable DHCP if you use port forwarding, but you dont have to disable it. Just assign your pc anywhere host pc a static ip, ex 192.168.1.xxx. Just be sure not to make it a number that the DHCP would assign. In the router setup, go to advanced options and go to dynamic forwarding. The DHCP software has assigned your pc(s) an IP address. In the router, select the pc with the ip address for that machine. Assign it the port for PC anywhere. If this doesn't work for you, make it static. If you have a dynamic address, check out
They have a cool service where they will host a sub domain for you for less than $30 a year. Instead of accessing your host pc thru an IP address, connect using PC Anywhere's TCP/IP function and use a domain name instead. Much easier!!!! In PC anywere, under remote machine, use yourcompany.tzo.com as remote pc name instead of an ip address. When you connect, the router will forward your request to the PC you listed as the pc anywhere host pc.
I'm also trying to install PC Anywhers as a HOST behind LinkSys router.
I was browsing Symantec, and came accross something that said that it you must use LinkSys firmware version BEFORE 1.34. My curennt versino is 1.38 plus.
I'd sure like to hear from people who can do this.
There is an artical on Symantec's site eaplaining how to set up pcAnywhere with a dynamic IP. Just change the last octet of the IP address to 255; this will make the program search the range of IP addresses in that subnet. Most ISP's with dynamic IP addresses only change the last octet. Also, you can go to
and sign up for a free forwarding service which will remedy the dynamic IP problem. Other than that, you shouldn't have a problem. I am running the same router at my home with success; even connecting to it with a LinkSys wireless access point.
