Sometimes my links palette will show an image, however there is no information available regarding the image. The image will not even have a name displayed next to the thumbnail in the links palette. Is this image linked properly?

I have no way of telling, as per a page layout program (Quark), which would promptme to re-link any missing images.

When I do link the image to a file, the name appears in the palette, along with the other info, however when the image updates onscreen, the quality gets granier (when compared to when the image was unidentified in the lins palette, as before)

What's going on?

Thanks!

It means that the image is embeded in the Illustrator file
If it has info it means that the image is not embeded only linked.
When you place an into Illustrator it will give you the option to embed or not.
I would say you have it set to link, that's why anything you place shows info about it. Doing it that way lets you open the image in photoshop to make adjustments which will then relink to the Illustrator file.
Pictures you have which are embeded won't let you make any changes to.
