I am trying to transfer files between 2 laptops, and I do not have both machines setup for the same domains.

Is there a way to connect both laptops via an ethernet cable (STD or cross-over) that will enable file sharing between the two? Also, there are 2 different OSs: Windows 2000 & Windows 98. Both laptops have ethernet cards, etc., but I have been unable to find any help on the machines to perform this activity sucessfully.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

You will need a "Crossover" style cable to connect PC to PC.
Your network cards need to be configured to use at the least (i think) File and Print sharing, Client for MS Networks and at least one protocol(netbeui is easiest)

You will also have to go to each folder or drive and share it from its property menu.

Configure both computers to be in the same workgroup and they should "see" each other in network neighborhood.

Hope this helps.....

Simpler way. Write down the current IP configurations.

Connect laptops with crossover cable.

Set IP's to be on the same subnet so they can see each other, e.g. 192.168.1.1/24 & 192.168.1.2/24 - ping each other to make sure.

Now if you have the local administrator account & password then at a command prompt on 192.168.1.1 enter the following:

net use * \\192.168.1.2\c$ /user:<administrator account> <admin password>

You will have mapped a drive from the second to the first. Copy away to your hearat's content. Don't forget to change the IP's back to what they were originally.
