I am trying to add a subreport and link it with the main report by the name field, but I am having a problem with the case. For example, the main report is pulling 'John Smith' and 'Bill Hays' whereas the data in the subreport is 'JOHN SMITH' and 'BILL HAYS' and so it doesn't link properly. Is there a way around this?

Based upon how the data is, your best bet is to create a formula in the main report that converts the name field to uppercase.
You can then change the links in the main report to link on the formula field, instead of the name field, in the main report, to the name field in the subreport.

Add UPPERCASE to your subreport record selection
Code:
uppercase({?PM-Table.name}) = {subtable.name}
