I want to create a link to a word template so that everytime the link is pressed it will open up a new version of that document. When I use something like <A HREF="summary.dot"> it opens up the document template ready for editing, rather than a new instance. I can see why it does it, but don't know the easiest way to solve it.
hmmm...where is the link? and where is the template file? if you're in charge fo the server, I'll be MUCH more able to help you with this one.
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. basic object is to give network users access to a number of word templates via a web page, rather than getting them to copy to their pc's (difficult as we have no software to manage the process, and the users are not that literate)
unfortunately we're not in charge of the server,as the web page is not hosted on a server. The html page is on a network drive, as are the templates, users will access via IE4, am a bit powerless to do anything too much with the default security settings.
I'm not positive that I know what you mean by "a new instance" except that you probably want it to actually be a template where they can use it but not edit it. One way to do it is to lock the document so that they can't edit it unless they know how to unlock it. This is a feature of templates. I don't remember how to do it but you can check the Help section.
I put some templates on the Internet and couldn't use the "dot" extension because browsers don't know which program to use to open it. What I did to get around it was that I changed the extension to "doc" but when the document is clicked on and opened in Word it opens it as a template and it works fine.

by new instance I mean, I don't want the user to overwrite the original, so an instance is a copy of the original.
however I want the users to be able to edit the documents, so locking won't be that handy. i liked your hint about changing the dot extension to dot, however when the user goes to save it the default type will be dot which they can't change. many thanks for your help
Hmmm....attrib the template with a "Read-Only" attribute so the users can open & view the template; but they'll be forced to use a diferent name to save it....once you've got them all trained to go to "File>Save As" this will soulve the problem ;)
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller.
