I have an Access 2000 database. Another user has read-only access to it via network security. I instructed her to create her own Access 2000 database and then link to the tables in mine so she can create her own queries, but when she tries to link to the tables, she gets an error "could not lock file."

Does linking a table want exclusive access?

TIA, Susie

This is probably because she doesn't have write privileges to that network location. In order to open the database with the original tables to link, she needs to ability to create a .ldb file. I had this problem too with my users.

Hmm, but if she's opening database2 on her PC and just linking to the tables in database1, why should it try to create an .ldb on database1?

Even with linked tables, it still opens the database (the tables are located in) when you open the tables.
