linking placed images in ai9

I want to link my placed image (originally from photoshop), when I do this I check the link check box from the place menu. However, when I search for my linked images in ai9, (the links palette) they are not there. So I placed the image without checking the link check box, now they show up in the links palette? It seems backwards, any reason?

They should show up in the links pallete either way. The difference is there should be a little icon next to it if its embeded. I've noticed the link pallete takes a second or two to load when ever I swith to it. Maybe just give it a second or hide and show it once or twice to see if it will refresh. BEHOLD!
