Linking PC to Mac via Firewire?

As you may (or may not!) know you can link the Apple iBook to your desktop mac via a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. This makes one of them a slave hdd on your dektop.

QUESTION: Can I do it between an iMac and a PC Laptop? If so does it make a difference that the pc is 4 pin?

I am running win xp pro on lappy and OS X.1.5 on iMac

Point of interest, when I have tried it the laptop locks my mac and reads my firewire cdrw. I can even read and write to the cdrw thru the mac!
