I have a database with a front end and back end. the front end is to be distrubuted across a number of sites and the backend will sit with a central department, when i try to link the tables everything is fine, until i distribute to other sites. an error is produced "not a valid path". I assume it has something to do with either drive mapping or server names but im not too clued up on either of these. Ive located the liked table manager but it doesnt allow me to edit the paths. Any ideas anyone?

The linked tables manager is the correct tool to use.
What happens when you try to use it?

Are you saying that rather than picking the _be file from the relink dialog box (which would then insert the path including the drive letter) you cannot type in the path specifying the actual server name (as opposed to drive letter) like:

"\\ServerName\RestOfPath"

Evalesthy,

I forgot to mention im using access97. i cant see anywhere that i can actualy type a path. Im using 'File'-'Get External Data', 'Link Tables'
I cant find anywhere that i can view the path or even edit it.

Don't you get a folder/file browse dialog box when you select Link?

yes, but that only allows me to browse for the db file once i select the access database it opens a new window that i can then choose a table from.
Sorry if im not being as clear as possible

If you go to Tools>Addins you will see the linked tables manager.
This shows you your existing links and lets you re-link to a different location. If you choose a route that includes the server name then all users can use (their own copy of)the same front-end file. Drive mappings don't then matter.

when you go to the linked table manager, instead of hitting the BROWSE button, manually type in
\\servername\sharename\ THEN hit browse and browse the rest of the way if you want to. it will not have the drive letter, but the full path instead.
