Linked tables to text file

I have a text file that is created by another program. I have linked this table to Access so I run statments with the report writer. I just added another field to this text file. However, I can not view that new field in Access. I have updated my links and just can't get it to show up.
If I unlink the table and link it again, I will lose the field names and have to add those in ... hoping I match them exactly to the current fields in my reports.
Any suggestions?

Rita

Hi Rita,
I once spent a frustrating couple of days with the same problem. Researched everywhere. What I concluded is that once it's linked, it's linked. No modifying it.

What I ended up doing is using the Documenter (Tools|Analyze|Documenter) to get a detailed list of the fields. Used that list to get the names right when I relinked the file.

There is also a field list in MSysIMEXColumns, but it's the same one you get with the Documenter, and is not subject to updating (too bad).

I'd go ahead and bite the bullet.

Good luck,
Tranman

MSysIMEXColumns is updateable throu action queries. I tried it 2 days ago succesfully [2thumbsup]. BUT you have to be very cautious with the values you enter!!!

I read it in a FAQ here but cann't remember it.

If you try anything remember --> Safety First = Back Up !

Cool! New knowledge! Definitely would want to set the CYA bit on this one. [smile]

Thanks, Jerry.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I am going to try and do the update query, as I am sure I will have need to update my links in the future.
I did do a work around ... I just made a copy of the text file giving it a different name, and linked that to my database. Once I related these two linked files, I was able to pull out the new fields.
