Linked tables in a replica

I have a classic replicated split database. In '97 I could redirect the links in the replica and the synchroization had no effect on the links.
However, in 2K redirecting the linked table causes an error message saying I can't change the links in this replica. That suggest to me, there are replicas you can change the links in. Also, synchonizing does not effect links.
