Linked Table Security 1

Hello All!

I have a quick (Hopefully) question regarding table security.

I recently linked a table from another database. When I tried to view the table in my database, the table would NOT open. I could not get into the information in the table from a query, form, or report.

I also could not delete the linked table from my database after that either.

Does anyone know what this is?

Disclaimer: I do have access to the other Database and can view the table normally on that Database. The workaround I did was to Append all the data in the table to my database and then used it from there.

Hi,

Might be an idea to state exactly why you thought the table would not open. Did it give an error message, or did it do nothing whatsoever?

Where and how did you try to open the table?

If you don't have access to the other Database how can you view the table normally on that Database?

As Darrylle suggests, you need to give more information. Ann

Ann,

I do have access to the other database. Its another departments database that houses some information that I need. On that database I can view, manipulate the data normally.

Darrylle,

In my new database (Both are Access 2000) I right clicked and clicked link table. I then selected the other database and selected the table that I wanted. The table seemed to link just fine to my new database.

However, when I went to view (Both with double clicking and right clicking and selecting view, and design) I would get an hourglass for a couple seconds and then nothing would happen. Then I tried to delete the link to try again and it asked me if I was sure I wanted to delete the link. I said yes and it didn't go away.

I then tried accessing the data from the table in a query and I could see the fields from the table in the query view but when I tried to view the query, nothing happened. Same hourglass for a couple of seconds and then nothing.

Same thing with Forms and Reports. Let me see the fields from the table but not the actual data when I tried to view the report.

Next, I tried importing the table directly from the database. Right clicking and selecting import. The same thing happened again.

I had to import all my tables/queries to a new database and delete the database that had the link in it because I couldn't use the linked table.

Hope that explains what is going on!

Chris

Chris, first an apology. I misread your post as "don't" have access instead of "do" have access.

Secondly, thanks for the tip. After more than 5 years of using Access I honestly didn't know that you could link/import by right-clicking. You just saved me a couple of steps. I know you posted a question but have a star for teaching me something new.

I just tried to recreate your situation and had no problem. I could open the table and view data in a query. Curious. Maybe Darrylle has run into this before. Hope you don't mind that I mark this post for email; maybe something will come to me.

Hi Chris. Are things still going okay in your new database? If so, maybe this is a non-issue now. But this kinda stuff really bugs me.

You could NOT link or import the tables to the old (deleted) db but you COULD import the tables to the new db. Right? Did you import to the new db by right-clicking or the old fashioned way (File, Get External Data...) Are you able to link those tables in your new db?

Maybe the old (deleted) db just got corrupted? Ann

Ann,

Don't worry about it too much, I did create a work around that allowed me to get the data that I needed from the table. I created a make table query in the old db that puts the data I need into my new db. Then I can manipulate the data from there.

I could link and import the table just fine. However, if I tried to open the table or use the table in any way, it wouldn't work.

Still not sure what happened but since I have created a work around and the database doesn't technically belong to me (It belongs to another department) I am leaving it alone.

Thanks for your help and concern!

Chris
