this is probably something simple but i can't see it. I have linked an excel spreadsheet to my database but when i open the table it is read only. The spreadsheet itself is not read only. - how can I change this?

You can't change the Excel linked table unless you have Access 2000, later versins lost that functionality. Use it as a temp table and append it to a Access table to work the data, if required back in Excel, use macro's (or VBA) to automate the steps using the Transferspreadsheet method.

If you need more help with doing this, explain what you do with your data.

Thanks Ziggy

That explains it - I tried on a machine with access 2000 and it worked - wonder why they changed it?

Ya that threw me off when we upgraded to 2002 version a few years ago, I didn't use it much to update both ways, but thought it was handy.

I found the reason on MS site, near the bottom it mentions Legal reasons, their must have been complaints or Lawsuits about this?
