Hi,

i will be setting up linked servers from sql server 2000 and 2005 to an oracle instance.

2000 is on one server and 2005 on the other. do i need to install the oracle client on both the sql servers?

Yes. I would suggest the InstantClient

After you do that the TNSNAMES file will need to be configured as always when connecting to Oracle.

Make sure to install the full version of the client tools. I did the quick install and it left out some dll's that were needed. I had to go back and re-install the full version of the Oracle Client.

I think the only thing I used on my SQL Servers (after going back and forth many times :p) was from the universal installer everything under the "Oracle Windows Interface" section. This by default installs the universal installer and ODBC, OLE components

Although it is nice to install SQL*Plus for testing reasons. I did uninstall it after that though. This was the most "thin" I could get the installation while keeping it working.
