Question: are linked servers needed in order to use replication?

Thanks

I believe it is, however if you wish to test this, just try to create it on non-linked servers to see whether it will let you.

It shouldn't allow you to add remote distributors or subscribers if those servers aren't linked. If it does, that indicates to me that it will allow replication with non-linked servers. Of course, once you pass that hurdle, the next one is authentication and I believe that replication requires the SQL Services to run on Domain User accounts and be the same on all servers being replicated from and to.

Does that help?

i haven't found a direct answer to my question in either books or online, however from what i've read, i'm inferring that linked servers are *not* needed in replication - they are alternatives to pick from - linked server *or* replication

in fact, my several hundred page tome on 2000 replication devotes about three sentences to linked servers, which leades me to believe it is not an intregral part of replicaton

As far as i remember when i did it (about a year ago now) i didnt need to link the servers in any way.

Just checked back on my old SQL7 trans rep and no, doesn't look like you need linked servers. That was a push subscription.
