LinkDown errors

We are using HP openview to monitor our Cisco equipment and we get two errors that I do not understand.

1) Cisco Agent Interface Down (linkDown Trap) on interface Serial0 locIfReason: EIA signal lost

2) Cisco Agent Interface Down (linkDown Trap) on interface Serial1 locIfReason: SDLC carrier changed to down.

I do not understand these two errors. How should I go about troubleshooting / Preventing them?
