link to download excel file in a website

Hi,
I have a link in my website to download an excel file. When you click on it it open the file within the browser.
Is there any way to make it prompt a "save as" instead of opening the file?

change the file extenstion to something that you don't think will be registered file type on the users machines.

That's the cheap way. There are others but mostly require some developement.

You could also zip the file, this still avoids server-side scripting.

I need it to be a xls file becuase that file will be a complementary file for an application and it has to be downloaded as xls.
Any other suggestions?
