Folks,

in similar vein, I have two questions for TT'ers out there.

What is the longest vowel free word of which you know (English only please). I know of crypts and syzygys at 6 and 7, but no more. Can anyone top that.

Question 2, what is the generic adjective for words which mean something backwards? Do not confuse this with palindromic words such as redivider. I mean the word "was", which reverses to the meaningful word "saw". How does one describe such lacunae in the ocean of English in which we all swim in?

Sorry - but the "y" in the words you've provided are considered vowels....

Geez, John (Tharg), a guy can get no respect around here sometimes, huh? <grin> MAI can be a tough audience.

To follow your original train of thought, how about I suggest a linguistic brain teaser (that I believe we might have done before, but it can be fun to redo good mental gymnastics from time to time): Suggest one or more words that contain a syllable that has no vowel (i.e., no a,e,i,o,u, or y).

r397,

that's a failure to proof read before clicking on "post" - not (I am pleased to say) poor English, up with which I will not put.

Am I allowed Welsh words Tharg? [wink]

The question should be [red]Is it worth trying to do?[/red] not [blue] Can it be done?[/blue]

I am prepared to discuss your somewhat aberrant proposal whilst imbibing liquid refreshment.

Perhaps (after sufficient refreshment) I will be unable to distinguish 'twixt Welsh and my mother tongue, and allow any old jollop into the murky depths of English errata.

We should do that then. (But probably not today!)
